The Boy and the Heron and Godzilla both win at the 2024 Oscars

Written by Richard Durrance on 11 Mar 2024

A good night for Japanese cinema as as The Boy and the Heron flew off with Best Animated Film at the 2024 Oscars, giving Hayao Miyazaki his second Oscar, for his celebrated semi-autobiographical film. But not only that...

50-years after its first outing, Godzilla finally gained its due (if perhaps missing out on a best actor award), Godzilla Minus One receiving the award for Best Visual Effects, for it's visceral assault on the senses. An incredible achievement when considering the meagre budget of under $15 million. Huge congratulations to Takashi Yamazaki and his team. Take note, Hollywood!

And let's not forget the other start of the show: the Godzilla team's bespoke footwear! Can definitely see these taking off.

About Richard Durrance

Long-time anime dilettante and general lover of cinema. Obsessive re-watcher of 'stuff'. Has issues with dubs. Will go off on tangents about other things that no one else cares about but is sadly passionate about. (Also, parentheses come as standard.) Looks curiously like Jo Shishido, hamster cheeks and all.
