Super Mario movie breaks box office records

Written by Ross Locksley on 10 Apr 2023

The new Super Mario Bros movie has broken box office records by grossing £303 million globally in its opening 5 days. It's beaten Frozen 2 despite playing in fewer theatres and having yet to open in arguably two of its biggest markets, South Korea and Japan.

As seems typical, audiences and professional critics seem to be divided, with scathing reviews from online publications seemingly at odds with overwhelming public adoration of the Italian plumber and his pals. Rotten Tomatoes currently has critics at 56% and Audiences at 96%.

While Disney has been very controversial with releases of late, with both Lightyear and Strange Worlds losing millions for the House of Mouse, it seems that the oft-used excuse of a public unwillingness to return to theatres has now been utterly debunked (if Spider-Man No Way Home and John Wick 4 hadn't discredited that line already).

Given the success of the film, it's now highly likely we'll see other Nintendo franchises developed to create an "NCU". Legend of Zelda is ripe for adaptation, with multiple games featuring beloved storylines such as Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

And how about Metroid as a horror movie? The possibilities, it seems, are endless.
