My Deer Friend Nokotan makes historic TV debut in Mexico

Written by Ross Locksley on 10 Oct 2024

My Deer Friend Nokoitan has been a surprise hit globally and now the series has made a historic splash in Mexico by streaming on national television station Canel (Channel) 22, the first free to air TV station outside of Japan to do so.

Anime on national TV is as rare in Mexico as it is in the UK, but the channel's decision to air the series free for the general public has been met with lots of praise among Mexican fans, with many taking to twitter to express their surprise and delight:

“Finally, Mexico will have culture on free TV!”

“Now, this is Anime.”

“The anime hasn’t even finished airing in Japan, and it’s already premiering on free TV in Mexico. It’s awesome! I don’t remember this happening before.”

“A great decision to bring anime to free TV so more people can get to know it.”

“If it stays on air, the next generations might turn out to be otakus too.”

The series continues to break down barriers and delight fans old and new. It's great to see Latin fans getting a series free to air and bringing some Japanese culture to the region.

About My Deer Friend Nokotan
Koshi Torako, a high schooler, one day feels something cold hit her face. Looking up, she spots a girl stuck, her antlers tangled in power lines. Helping Shikanoko, antlered and peculiar, turns Torako's life, a model student by appearance only, upside down. Thus begins a tale of a girl (once a delinquent) and another (a deer?), in this Girl Meets Deer adventure!

The original manga for My Deer Friend Nokotan from author Oshioshio is widely available in English. The first four volumes of the series are available in print from Seven Seas Entertainment, and digitally via BOOKWALKER.
