Legendary acquire film rights to Street Fighter

A new Street Fighter film is already in the works from Hollywood studio Legendary Entertainment according to the official Street Fighter twitter account.

The franchise made it's theatrical debut with the 1994 release from Universal pictures starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile and the incomparable Raul Julia gleefully chewing the scenery in his final performance and delivering a monologue that has become almost universally beloved even if the accompanying film itself was terrible. (For me, it was a Tuesday...)

Street Fighter has always struggled, like most video games, to get an adaptation worthy of the spirit of the franchise. Notably Udon's comics have been utterly delightful in portraying the characters in a fantastic manner, and hopefully the film studio will look at this fine body or work as part of their research for the film. You certainly won't find a more diverse cast of characters anywhere else, which should automatically tick the ESG box to get the film well-funded.

There's not much more to say at this stage, but we can only hope the people in charge love Street Fighter as much as we do and finally bring some big-screen justice to our favourite characters.
