Anime continues to dominate cinema

Written by Ross Locksley on 28 Oct 2025

Following on from Demon Slayer's success at the cinema with a $650 million worldwide gross, Chainsaw Man pulled in $17.2 million on its opening weekend with it's Reze Arc movie, bettered only by 2021's Demon Slayer Mugen Train ($21.2 million) and 2022's Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero at $21.1 million. The film is currently enjoying a 100% positive critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, though The New York Times dropped a negative review recently whereby they didn't seem to know anything about the series before going in and printing an uninformed opinion.

Admittedly the film hasn't had much in the way of quality competition in cinemas this month, but it's still a major win for Sony after they dropped the ball with their disastrous decision to send Kpop Demon Hunters to Netflix, where it became the most watched Netflix film of all time before scoring big money on Singalong events at cinemas.

Anime seems to be a major lifeline for cinemas with Hollywood throwing so many flops at the screen this year, as they screen not only new movies but also classics like last month's iconic Satoshi Kon crafted Perfect Blue

If you haven't had a chance to see the movie yet, check out the trailer:
