Cardiff Animation Festival details in full

This year's Cardiff Animation Festival will be a hybrid edition, playing 7–10 April in Cardiff, UK, and 7–24 April online worldwide.

In-person screenings are £6 full price, £4 concessions or included in a festival pass for £80 full price or £55 concessions, except for the festival edition of Cardiff Animation Nights, for which audience members can pay what they can.

The programmes available online allow viewers to pay what they can for each programme or pay £20 for an online pass. Each programme can be watched on demand on Eventive at any point during  7–24 April BST or watched at the same time as other viewers in a watch party at a particular time.

The Japanese productions selected for this year's festival are:

• The Welsh premiere of Honami Yano's A Bite of Bone (骨嚙み Honekami, trailer with English subtitles) in Shorts 1: Together/Apart. The programme will be played on 8 April at 2:15 pm and 9 April at 12:15 pm at Chapter and available online, with a watch party on 11 April at 8:00 pm BST.

A Bite of Bone previously won the Grand Prize for Short Animation at Ottawa International Animation Festival in 2021 and a New Face Award in the Animation Division of Japan Media Arts Festival this March. It has also been selected for last year's London International Animation Festival and this year's New York International Children's Film Festival and Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The making of it is the subject of a recent episode of NHK WORLD–JAPAN's documentary series Anime Supernova, broadcast with English subtitles worldwide on 26 February 2022 and available on demand for free until 26 February 2023.

• Koji Yamamura's Polar Bear Bears Boredom (ホッキョクグマすっごくひま Hokkyokuguma suggoku hima, Japanese trailer) in Shorts 3: Sound/Vision. The programme will be played on 7 April at 1:00 pm and 8 April at 12:30 pm at Chapter and available online, with a watch party on 15 April at 1:00 pm BST.

• The UK premiere of Ryotaro Miyajima's NOMINO SUKUNE (野見宿禰 Nomi no Sukune) in Shorts 6: Reel/Life. The programme will be played on 7 April at 4:15 pm and 10 April at 12:15 pm at Chapter and available online, with a watch party on 17 April at 11:00 am BST.

• Shinobu Soejima's Blink in the Desert (trailer) in a special festival launch edition of Cardiff Animation Nights on 7 April at 6:30 pm at DEPOT.

• Kenji Iwaisawa's ON-GAKU: Our Sound (音楽 Ongaku), based on the manga by Hiroyuki Ohashi, (trailer with English subtitles) on 8 April at 11:30 am (for parents and carers with children under a year old) and 9 April at 11:00 am (for a general audience) at Chapter and the Welsh premiere of loundraw's Summer Ghost (サマーゴースト Samā Gōsuto, US announcement trailer) on 10 April at 5:00 pm at Chapter, each with a pre-recorded interview with their director, in screenings presented by Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival.

• Mami Sunada's documentary about Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata at Studio Ghibli, The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (夢と狂気の王国 Yume to kyōki no ōkoku, US trailer), on 10 April at 10:30 am at Chapter.

In addition, Michael Leader and Jake Cunningham of the podcast Ghibliotheque will be presenting their audiovisual live show The Z–A of Studio Ghibli on 10 April at 1:00 pm at Chapter and signing copies of their book Ghibliotheque: The Unofficial Guide to the Films of Studio Ghibli.

The winners of Best Short Film, Best Micro Short, Best Student Film, Best Family Film and the Audience Award will be announced at the festival's awards ceremony on 10 April at 7:00 pm BST at Chapter. The ceremony will be streamed live online at the same time (and will be archived until 24 April at 11:45 pm BST) and is free to attend, whether in person or online.
