Akira Toriyama dies aged 68

Written by Ross Locksley on 08 Mar 2024

Acclaimed creator of Dragon Ball Z, Akira Toriyama, has passed away aged 68. One of the most influential Japanese creators of all time, with his works read in almost every country in the world, will be sorely missed.

His work in the early 80's, most notably Dr Slump, established him as a rising super star within the industry, but it was Dragon Ball that made him a legend.

He died on March 1st and the funeral was attended by a few close friends and family. Meanwhile fans around the world have been expressing their sadness at the creative giants departure. Dragon Ball was a huge part of Cartoon Network's Toonami block, and for many was their introduction to the wider world of anime and manga. His style and characters are iconic and while anime in cinema is becoming more commonplace, the success of Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero doubtless gave cinemas the confidence to take more risks on other Japanese animated films.

A statement from his studio read:

"He would have many more things to achieve. However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world. We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come"

Always modest about his success, he would often state he had no idea how his work became so popular. Needless to say this is sad day for his fans, especially having lost other talents such as Leiji Matsumoto and Yoshitaka Murayama so recently.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Akira Toriyama's ffriends and family, joining those of his millions of fans around the world.

RIP Akira Toriyama, 1955-2024.
